Local Walks
Quiet, peaceful walks all around, with a detailed walk guide highlighting potential triggers.
Raw Feeder Friendly
The Cow Shed provides additional freezer space for those feeding raw for longer stays, bike storage and wood storage to keep things toasty!
Dog Crate Provided
A cosy crate is available, and the accommodation allows guests to leave their dogs for short periods while they explore with their dog safe in the cabin. Please only leave dogs if they are calm and unstressed.
Fully Secured with 6ft Fencing.
The property is fully enclosed with 6ft fencing, providing complete security for dogs of all sizes. Road-facing fencing is solid closed-board, and several other areas also feature 6ft fencing.
The entire perimeter is 6ft high, including a 6ft fenced garden area.
Private 6ft Fenced Woodland Garden
Red Dog Retreat also has a dedicated half-acre of 6-foot fenced woodland area with secondary ground-level fencing for small dogs, ideal for them to run, zoom, and explore in safely, whilst you relax.
Portable Doggy Wash
A portable doggy wash is available for muddy paws, ensuring dogs can live their best lives exploring the grounds without the mud!
Food Delivery
The host offers the ability to order food and have it delivered, unpacked, and waiting for you in the fridge when you arrive. For those with dogs that struggle with people, those who don’t want to venture too far, or who worry about deliveries, it’s a perfect, stress-free start to your stay.
Things to note
Hosts On Site
Although the hosts live close together, guests will not see them unless they wish to; there is additional buffer fencing that completely separates them. The host is tucked well away to the back of the cabin, and its boundaries are reinforced with double “buffer” fencing for added privacy and security.
Country Road
There is a quiet country road nearby with minimal traffic. However, due to the rural location, guests may occasionally encounter farm vehicles or motorbikes, especially during the summer. Dogs with strong aversive reactions to traffic sounds are encouraged to contact the hosts ahead of booking to discuss potentially busier periods.
Find out more
Tucked on the edge of 7 acres of woodland and open valley views, Red Dog Retreat offers a quiet escape where both humans and their dogs can finally exhale. The log cabin sits gently among the trees, wrapped in warm timber and soft natural light, creating a space that feels as if it has always belonged to the landscape. Here, guests wake to birdsong, the rustle of leaves and the comforting sense of complete privacy.
Every corner of the retreat has been shaped with intention, calm pathways through the trees, thoughtfully designed 6ft fencing for security and seclusion, and pockets of space where dogs can be without pressure or triggers. Across the valley, the views open wide and unbroken, giving a sense of breathing room that many reactive dog owners rarely find on holiday. It’s a setting built for slow mornings, long quiet walks and evenings curled beside the log burner.
Expertise With Reactive Dogs
Red Dog Retreat was born from the hosts’ own journey with their reactive dog, Cooper. Through learning, behaviourist support and a commitment to positive reinforcement, they reshaped daily life to meet his needs. Their move to rural Mid-Wales grew from the desire to give him peace, and eventually, to offer that same sense of safety to others. Their lived experience forms the foundation of the retreat. This is a space designed with understanding, empathy, and real-world knowledge of what reactive dogs need to feel secure.
Inside the Cabin
The living space is a warm, timber-wrapped sanctuary with high-beamed ceilings and a modern black log burner, ready for slow, cosy evenings by the fire. Books, maps and guides line rustic shelving, inviting local exploration, while a comfy dog bed awaits alongside the fire for post-walkies snoozing.
The kitchen is fully equipped and thoughtfully laid out, perfect for easy meals, with fresh sourdough and eggs from the hosts’ chickens awaiting human guests and a jar of treats, a basket of natural chews, a blanket, and towels for doggy guests!
You can also order your food for delivery before your arrival and have it lovingly unpacked and ready in the cabin when you arrive. For dogs that struggle with stranger danger, this means you can pack lighter and not have to worry about nipping out ot the shops or ordering food for your stay.
The two bedrooms are snug and entirely wrapped in rich wood tones, sleeping four with one king bedroom and a double. Dogs are, of course, warmly welcome to join you on the beds and furniture, and they are comfortable and inviting.
The Garden & Fencing
The additional internal fencing is yet to be completed (I visited just before completion and will revisit in the summer), so some of it is missing from these images. All exterior fencing is six-foot fencing, but a smaller part of the decking will also be fenced, and there will be a fire pit, roofing on the doggy wash area, and an outdoor kitchen completed prior to the opening in 2026. You can book in advance now, and I highly recommend you do, as spots with 6-foot fencing are usually snapped up quickly.
