Extra features

Dogs Stay Free of Charge
No dog charge and a thoughtful doggy hamper awaits! Designed to make every canine guest feel at home. It includes a bag of specially made natural dog treats, a treat bag with a roll of poo bags, and a selection of dog bowls, including an extra-large water bowl.

In the outdoor storage boxes, guests will find towels and a variety of dog toys, along with several small throws for added comfort (guests are encouraged to bring their own throws for their dogs to enjoy).

Dogs Allowed on Furniture
Dogs are welcome on the furniture and beds. Bedding and towels are added as extras at the time of booking, as many guests, particularly those travelling with their dogs, prefer to bring their own. However dogs are allowed on bedding and beds either way.

Local Walks
New for April 2025, gated access has been introduced, allowing guests to step directly from the meadow onto the extensive network of surrounding footpaths. These paths are separated from any livestock by secure fencing, creating stock-free routes where dogs can often enjoy walks for miles before reaching any adjoining fields with animals. (These spaces are shared with other guests.)

Secure Garden
The garden is large with fencing that is a combination of stock, rail, and picket screening, with kick boards at the bottom to ensure security for smaller dogs.

Things to note

Adults Only
Shepherds Rest is an adults-only retreat, thoughtfully created for guests seeking peace, quiet, and a slower pace. With no children, it offers a calm, uninterrupted atmosphere perfect for unwinding and reconnecting.

Shared Parking
The car park is shared but separate from the glamping meadow to maintain the site's peace and tranquillity and protect the habitat for local wildlife. The site has three cabins, so you would only encounter two other couples or solo guests, as the site is adults-only.

En route to the glamping meadow from the car park, the hosts have also created sniff trails and doggy passing places so that more nervous dogs can take time out if one of the other two cabin guests happens to be passing at the same point at arrival/departure.

Dogs
This Cabin is one of three cosy cabins on site. Woodpecker is the furthest and most tucked away of the 3 cabins, which is why we recommend this one as the best suited for more nervous and reactive dogs.

You may hear other guests' dogs if they have them in the distance, but otherwise are less likely to see dogs.

Unplugged
There’s no Wi-Fi on-site, the goal being to help guests truly switch off and unplug. Guests are encouraged to put their phones away, reconnect with each other, and make the most of their surroundings. Whether it’s opening a bottle, heading out for a walk, or simply relaxing, it’s the perfect opportunity to disconnect.

For those who can’t resist checking in, there is good 4G coverage and USB charging sockets available.

Noise-sensitive dogs
Woodpecker sits within a secluded meadow surrounded by trees and hedgerows, offering a calm, enclosed setting away from traffic. Guests may occasionally hear distant farm machinery during harvest or faint road noise.

Find out more

Tucked away at the quietest edge of the meadow, Woodpecker Cabin is the most secluded of the three retreats at Rutland Rural Retreats. A peaceful hideaway perfectly suited to reactive or more sensitive dogs who thrive on calm and space. With no passing guests and only the gentle rustle of the trees for company, it’s a peaceful little haven where couples and their canine companions can relax and unwind.

Inside
Step inside and you’ll find soft, warm lighting, driftwood accents and an inviting double bed that calls for slow mornings under the covers. Every detail has been considered with comfort for humans and hounds in mind, from the cosy leather sofa where dogs are welcomed warmly to join you, through to the well-equipped kitchenette with hob. It's the perfect cosy space that feels instantly restful, where time seems to slow down. Guests will find everything they need for a comfortable stay: Hairdryer, two fans, all crockery and cooking utensils, kettle, rechargeable candles, board games, walking books, rechargeable torch, hangers, washing up liquid, handwash, shower wash, and starter supplies for that first evening – cooking oil, tea, coffee, sugar, condiments; we also provide a welcome pack for the humans that typically includes local cake & bread, tiptree jams, chocolates, butter and milk.
a king-size bed in a separate bedroom, a pull-out leather day bed, a handcrafted kitchenette with a Belfast sink, an oak worktop, an oven, a hob, and a fridge. There’s also a stylish en-suite bathroom with an electric shower, flushing toilet, and underfloor heating for a true glamping escape.

Dogs & Garden
Outside, a fully enclosed garden provides complete peace of mind for owners and plenty of space for paws to explore. The fire pit and seating area are perfect for evenings spent under the stars, while the private deck offers a peaceful spot for coffee as the morning light filters across the meadow. Every detail at Woodpecker has been thoughtfully considered with canine comfort at heart. Your stay begins with a warm welcome. A bespoke hamper filled with natural dog treats made especially for Rutland Rural Retreats. Guests will find a treat bag stocked with eco poo bags, two to three bowls and an extra-large water bowl to keep tails wagging happily throughout their stay. The outdoor storage boxes hold towels for muddy paws, a few well-loved toys and a handful of small soft throws reserved just for furry guests, though owners are always encouraged to bring their own.

The private garden features a cosy dog tepee, a shaded little hideaway for four-legged guests, along with comfortable outdoor seating. It’s an inviting spot to unwind, gaze at the stars, or enjoy a quiet evening with a glass of something sparkling.

For older or smaller dogs, gentle doggy ramps make life easier, while sun loungers, paddling trays, and even a splash pool at the meadow entrance ensure there’s always a cool spot to unwind after a countryside wander. Because this is a truly dog-loving retreat, four-legged guests are warmly welcome on the furniture and beds, and cosy throws are provided so everyone can snuggle up together in comfort.

Each of the three cabins has its own charm Woodpecker, the most tucked away, is ideal for reactive or nervous dogs; Bumblebee is a great choice for bully breeds or those needing higher fencing (1.5m) and Shepherd’s Rest offers a gentle, quiet corner for more naturally timid companions. Luggage trolleys are available to help transport your belongings from the car park, over the wooden footbridge and gentle brook, to your tranquil retreat. All you need to bring are your toiletries, food, and a hearty appetite for relaxation!
