Extra features

Dogs Stay Free of Charge
No dog charge and a thoughtful doggy hamper awaits! Designed to make every canine guest feel at home. It includes a bag of specially made natural dog treats, a treat bag with a roll of poo bags, and a selection of dog bowls, including an extra-large water bowl.

In the outdoor storage boxes, guests will find towels and a variety of dog toys, along with several small throws for added comfort (guests are encouraged to bring their own throws for their dogs to enjoy).

The Garden
Fencing is a mixture of post and rail (1m at its lowest point) and 5ft hazel hurdles. There is additional picket fencing for privacy at the entrance to Shepherds Rest to minimise the disturbance of other guests on site by dogs. The garden also has maintained longer patches of grass for dogs to enjoy sniffing and exploring.

Dog Nook & Pets on Furniture
Dogs are allowed on the furniture and beds with you, using throws or your own sheets for those dogs who prefer their own space. A Cosy dog nook under the bed awaits smaller dogs who love a den.

Local Walks
New for April 2025, gated access has been introduced, allowing guests to step directly from the meadow onto the extensive network of surrounding footpaths. These paths are separated from any livestock by secure fencing, creating stock-free routes where dogs can often enjoy walks for miles before reaching any adjoining fields with animals. (These spaces are shared with other guests.)

Things to note

Adults Only
Shepherds Rest is an adults-only retreat, thoughtfully created for guests seeking peace, quiet, and a slower pace. With no children, it offers a calm, uninterrupted atmosphere perfect for unwinding and reconnecting.

Dogs Allowed on Furniture
Dogs are allowed on all furniture as long as guests bring throws to protect them. Bedding and towels are added as extras at the time of booking, as many guests, particularly those travelling with their dogs, prefer to bring their own. If using the host's bedding, guests are asked to bring their own throws for the beds to protect them from paws.

Shared Parking
The car park is shared but separate from the glamping meadow to maintain the site's peace and tranquillity and protect the habitat for local wildlife. The site has three cabins, so you would only encounter two other couples or solo guests, as the site is adults-only.

En route to the glamping meadow from the car park, the hosts have also created sniff trails and doggy passing places so that more nervous dogs can take time out if one of the other two cabin guests happens to be passing at the same point at arrival/departure.

Dogs
This shepherd's hut is one of three cosy cabins on site, and people may be heard briefly passing, and dogs may be seen briefly through fencing gaps, depending on your dog. You may hear other guests' dogs if they have them in the distance.

Unplugged
There’s no Wi-Fi on-site, the goal is to help guests truly switch off and unplug. Guests are encouraged to put their phones away, reconnect with each other, and make the most of their surroundings. Whether it’s opening a bottle, heading out for a walk, or simply relaxing, it’s the perfect opportunity to disconnect.

For those who can’t resist checking in, there is good 4G coverage and USB charging sockets available.

Find out more

Nestled deep within four acres of tranquil meadowland in the rolling hills of Rutland, Shepherds Rest offers the ultimate romantic, dog-friendly escape. Designed especially for couples and their anxious or nervous dogs, or those solo travellers with an anxious canine in tow. This secluded shepherd’s hut provides peace, space, and security.

Part of the Rutland Rural Retreats collection, Shepherds Rest is one of just three beautifully crafted glamping cabins set off the beaten track. Built to sit beautifully into the meadow surroundings, Shepherds Rest offers a natural calm with handcrafted finishes, gentle natural textures, and the feeling of peace that only open countryside can bring. Each of the three cabins is screened by trees, hazel hurdles, and meadow grasses, creating a lovely sense of privacy and calm. It’s an excellent choice for couples looking to unwind in peace, away from the busier feel of larger sites, and perfect for dogs who are a little shy and prefer their own quiet space. For more reactive dogs, the Woodpecker is best as it is tucked away the most.

For dogs
Every thoughtful touch at Shepherds Rest has been designed with doggy guests in mind. On arrival, each stay begins with a welcoming hamper featuring a bag of natural dog treats, made especially for Rutland Rural Retreats. Guests will find a handy treat bag complete with eco poo bags, alongside two to three dog bowls and an extra-large water bowl to keep tails wagging throughout their stay. In the outdoor storage boxes, there are towels for muddy paws, a selection of toys, and a few small dog throws provided, but guests are encouraged to bring their dog’s favourite blankets for added peace of mind. Each private garden also includes a dog tepee, offering a shady retreat for nervous or tired pups. For comfort and accessibility, doggy ramps are available for smaller or older dogs, along with doggy sun loungers, small paddling trays for cooling off, and a large splash pool at the meadow entrance - perfect for a refreshing dip before or after a countryside stroll.

Its fully enclosed private garden (the largest of the three) gives pet parents peace of mind, with a 1-metre fence perfect for most dogs to relax safely. For those with more athletic or jumpy pups, the Bumblebee cabin provides higher (1.5m) fencing.

Inside
Inside, guests will find everything they need for a comfortable stay: Hairdryer, two fans, all crockery and cooking utensils, kettle, rechargeable candles, board games, walking books, rechargeable torch, hangers, washing up liquid, handwash, shower wash, and starter supplies for that first evening – cooking oil, tea, coffee, sugar, condiments; we also provide a welcome pack for the humans that typically includes local cake & bread, tiptree jams, chocolates, butter and milk.
a king-size bed in a separate bedroom, a pull-out leather day bed, a handcrafted kitchenette with a Belfast sink, an oak worktop, an oven, a hob, and a fridge. There’s also a stylish en-suite bathroom with an electric shower, flushing toilet, and underfloor heating for a true glamping escape.

Outside
Outside, guests can unwind in the luxurious wood-fired hot tub complete with robes, logs, kindling, and firelighters or enjoy al fresco dining at the picnic table beside the fire pit and BBQ arm. (You will need to purchase the fire pit pack - logs, kindling and fire lighters as an extra when booking, unless you are bringing your own charcoal.) Additional log packs can be purchased on-site. This way, if you don’t intend to use the fire pit, you save.

The area is furnished with outdoor seating and sun loungers overlooking the meadow, ideal for those who love stargazing or quiet evenings with a glass of something sparkling.

Luggage trolleys are provided to carry belongings from the car park, across the wooden footbridge and babbling brook, to your peaceful retreat. Just bring your toiletries, food and your appetite for relaxation!
